Mar 21, 2026 – Casting Cares

Simpson – “Casting all your care upon Him” (I Peter v. 7).  This point was made two days ago in my small group, and then yesterday Joyce reiterated it, and now today it is being touched on again. Of course, we should learn to heed God’s correction and direction upon the first hearing, but long ago I learned that it’s especially important to be mindful of a message that comes in threes. Simpson writes, “Some things there are that God will not tolerate in us. We must leave them. Nehemiah would not talk with Sanballat about his charges and fears, but simply refused to have anything to do with the matter – even to go into the temple and pray about it. How very few things we really have to do with in life. If we would only drop all the needless things and simply do the things that absolutely touch and require our attention from morning till night, we would find what a small slender thread life was; but we string upon it a thousand imaginary beads that never come, and burden ourselves with cares and flurries that if we had trusted more, would never have needed to preoccupy our attention.”

I can absolutely attest to that. Carrie is getting married in Italy in seven months and a while back her fiance’s mother spent a lot of time putting together this very detailed and helpful spreadsheet about places to stay that week. I passed it along to my siblings; and, a short while later, when I heard about the plans they’d gone ahead and made (because things book up fast there), I was beginning to panic a bit. I wasn’t “worried.” I just knew I needed to be better prepared and do my part to make things happen. So, yesterday, before I went out for the day to an arts and crafts fair (in Fairhope, AL) with a friend, I sent a note to the first place on the list (which appears to be the most convenient to being near Carrie for part of that week).

I told the owner that I knew they were booked (by my brother) for the week, but I thought I’d at least check. As I was walking out the door, I said a breath prayer that I trusted God to help us make a plan and then we went out for the day and didn’t get home ‘til after dark. One of the first things I did, after we piled our purchases on the counter (and again were thrilled with our finds) was check my email. The woman had indeed answered me confirming that they are booked that week, BUT the next line was the “thank You God” line: “However if you trust on me I can have an option … In June we are going to open a new room in the same building….”

If we “trust on God, we can have an option!” Simpson concludes, “Wise indeed was the testimony of the dear old saint who said, in review of her past life, ‘I have had a great many troubles in my life, especially those that never came.” Now that’s a good refrigerator magnet quote if I ever heard one! And, because we have another fun day ahead going to an estate sale and then mother-of-the-bride dress shopping, I will end here for now, maybe for the day.

[Note: Fairhope is a charming coastal town (very arts focused) worth a visit if you’ve never been here, especially at this time of year for the arts and craft fair.]
