Mar 2, 2026 – Humility
Streams – Be ready in the morning, and then come up…. Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. No one is to come with you. (Exodus 34:2-3) Cowman points out that, “The morning is a critically important time of day. You must never face the day until you have faced God, nor look into the face of others until you have looked into His. You cannot expect to be victorious, if you begin your day in your own strength…. Meet with Him alone and regularly, having His Book of counsel open before you…. Those who have accomplished the most for God in this world are those who have been found on their knees early in the morning.”
JC – “I am the resurrection and the Life; all lasting Life emanates from Me…. As you come to Me and take My yoke upon you, I fill you with My very Life…. The Joy is Mine, and the Glory is Mine; but I bestow them on you as you live in My Presence, inviting Me to live fully in you.” See John 11:25, Matthew 11:28-29, and 1 Peter 1:8-9.
Power – Let this same attitude and purpose and [humble] mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus: [Let Him be your example in humility:]. Philippians 2:5. Joyce helps us understand this verse as she writes, “We often have problems in our relationships because our minds are full of pride….That doesn’t mean you should have a bad attitude about yourself, but it does mean you shouldn’t think you’re better than somebody else. Pride was Satan’s sin…. the Bible says we are to have the mind of Christ. Jesus had a humble mind. He thought about Himself in a balanced way…. even though He was the Son of God, He did not think Himself too good to serve others…. Take authority over prideful thoughts, and let God help you maintain a humble attitude.”
Prevail #61 is entitled, “The Lord Looks at the Heart” and is based on 1 Samuel 16:7. Larson offers a good understanding of this as she writes, “When God sent Samuel to anoint the next king, He cautioned the prophet to listen with His spiritual ears so he wouldn’t be misled by what he saw. We so often get it wrong. Our filter is profoundly skewed by our hurts and fears…. But if our eyes opened up to see what God sees, we’d marvel at the things God values, and what He finds distasteful…. May you discern what God sees when you look at others. And may you be who God is looking for when He’s ready to appoint the next influencer…. What you look for, you will find. Start looking for honor, humility, grace, and joy in others. You’ll find it.”
Utmost – Chambers digs deeper into the condition of our hearts as he asks, “Have you felt the hurt of the Lord to the uncovered quick, the place where the real sensitiveness of your life is lodged? …’Peter was grieved, because Jesus said unto him the third time….’ He was awakening to the fact that in the real true centre of his personal life he was devoted to Jesus and he began to see what the patient questioning meant…. It was a revelation to him to realise how much he did love the Lord…. But he did not know it until the probing, hurting questions of the Lord came. The Lord’s questions always reveal me to myself…. Our Lord never asks questions until the right time. Rarely, but probably once, He will get us into a corner where He will hurt us with His undeviating questions, and we will realise that we do love Him far more deeply than any profession can ever show.”
Simpson seems to concur as he writes, “God gives to us a power within which will hold our hearts in victory and purity…. It is the Holy Ghost; and when any thought or suggestion of evil arise in our breast, the quick conscience can instantly call upon the Holy Ghost to drive it out, and He will expel it at the command of faith or prayer, and keep us as pure as we are willing to be kept. But when the will surrenders and consents to evil, the Holy Ghost will not expel it. God, then, requires us to stand in holy vigilance, and He will do exceedingly abundantly for us as we hold fast that which is good, and He will also be in us a spirit of vigilance, showing us the evil and enabling us to detect, and to bring it to Him for expulsion and destruction.”
Max – This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. And his disciples believed in him. John 2:11 NLT Max reminds us of some of the miracles Jesus performed and writes, “John’s gospel could well have been subtitled That You May Believe…. God still calms the storms of life, still solves the problems of life, and still brings the dead to life…. All these events stand together as one voice, cheering you on, calling on you to believe that this miracle-working God cares for you, fights for you, and will come to your aid.”
JA – Young’s devotion touches back on Joyce’s focus on humility: “ Come to Me with humility in your heart, bowing before My infinite intelligence. Relinquish your demand to understand; accept the fact that many things are simply beyond your comprehension…. it’s vital to make room for mystery in your worldview…. The New Testament is full of revelations that came through My incarnation, life, death, and resurrection. You are immeasurably blessed to have this priceless knowledge! Nonetheless, the ways I work in your world are often mysterious to you…. This presents you with a choice: to resent My ways or to bow before Me in wonder and worship.” Like Peter did when he realized the depth of his gratitude and love for Jesus. See Romans 11:33 and Colossians 1:26.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Proverbs 3:5 NLT
